As part of the Government’s Electric Vehicle Programme , the Ministry of Transport is working on proposed legislative and road rule changes that would enable road controlling authorities to allow electric vehicles into special vehicle lanes. These changes are expected to take effect on 1 July 2017.

In anticipation of these changes, the NZ Transport Agency is undertaking preparation work to allow electric vehicles access to special vehicle lanes on the state highway network. The NZ Transport Agency will share its experience and lessons learnt with other road controlling authorities, championing the concept and encouraging engagement.

Flow chart

Prior to legislative changes, the NZ Transport Agency ranis running a two week trial allowing electric vehicle drivers access to five priority bypass lanes in Auckland from 6 to 20 March 2017.

Prior to the trial, Auckland-based electric vehicle owners on the motor vehicle register were sent an information pack asking that they complete a survey at the end of the trial period. The survey closes on 27 March 2017, after which a summary of the feedback will be posted on the NZ Transport Agency website.
