Setting safe speeds – proposed changes on Kāpiti roads

There has always been an expectation thatThe NZ Transport Agency and the Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway would change how people move around our district,Alliance are working with the Kāpiti Coast District Council to ensure the district’s roading network operates as safely and that traffic patterns and volumes would change on local roadsefficiently as possible once the Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway opened.

Late last year the NZ Transport Agency, the Kāpiti Coast District Council and the M2PP Alliance came together to work on making roads in Kāpiti safer and more efficient.

Over the past few months we jointly carried out consultation with residents, stakeholders and the community, to get feedback on proposed speed limits for roads that have been created in response to, or affected by, our Expressway construction work.

Results of the review and consultation

As part of this consultation, 98 community members or residents provided feedback, as well as 11 key stakeholders. Thank you again for your input in this process.

On Thursday 23 MarchThere is also a Speed Limits Review recommendations report was put forward to Kāpiti Coast District Councillors, and a Council resolution was passed onsummary table explaining the proposed speed limits for these roads.changes.

Giving feedback

All recommendation in the report were passed, which means from 12 April, the following speed limits will come into effect:The chance to give feedback closed on 31 January 2017. 

  • Emerald Glen Road (full length): the 100 km/h speed limit will change to 60 km/h.
  • Waterfall Road: (full length): the 100 km/h speed limit will change to 60 km/h.
  • Poplar Avenue (Raumati South): the 80 km/h speed limit will change to 50 km/h, making the full length of Poplar Avenue 50 km/h.
  • Otaihanga Road (Ratanui Road to State Highway 1): the 80 km/h speed limit will change to 60 km/h.
  • Ratanui Road (Otaihanga Road to 615m north east Mazengarb Road): the 80km/h speed limit will change to 60 km/h and the 50 km/h speed limit will be extended 20m to 635m north east of Mazengarb Road.
  • Ngā Manu Reserve Road (full length): a 60 km/h speed limit will be set.
  • Maurice Smith Way, Waikanae (full length): a 60 km/h speed limit will be set.
  • Te Kowhai Link Road, Peka Peka (full length): a 80 km/h speed limit will be set.
  • Hadfield Link Road, Peka Peka (full length): a 80 km/h speed limit will be set.

What happens to your feedback

The responses are being used to prepare a technical report and recommendations for the Council and the Transport Agency. This report will also take into account technical assessments of suitable speed limits. It will be submitted for a decision in late March 2017.
