There is no detour route available. The next update on the road status is expected at 9am Tuesday 27 September.
“Our contactors have made the site secure but will not work on clearing the slip overnight. The slip is still moving, and we need to wait until the morning when we will be able to better assess how long to will take to clear the road,” Wayne Oldfiled, Highway Manager, NZ Transport Agency says.
“Our contractors will be working hard to get the road open as soon as possible, and we appreciate the patience of motorists, and the local community.
“The Gisborne area has experienced a large amount of rain, and while this is the only closure on the state highway, we ask that motorists in other areas of the region to exercise extra care and drive to the conditions. As conditions can change rapidly, motorists should check road and weather conditions before they travel, and if possible, delay travel until conditions improve,” Mr Oldfield says.
