The Huntly section of the Waikato Expressway will connect to the already completed Ohinewai section in the north, and to the completed Ngaruawahia section at Taupiri. The project involves 3.5 million cubic metres of earthworks, including a 60 metre cutting through the Taupiri Range where 1 million cubic metres of material will be moved.

Waikato Expressway, Huntly Section aerial flyover. November 2015. Three months into the project the Fulton Hogan HEB Joint Venture had completed enabling works including fencing the project, some vegetation clearing and environmental controls.
