As we learn more about the resilience of the road network to the range of possible natural disasters, we better understand where we need to invest - both to increase its resilience and to provide better indicators and predictors of potential disruption.
This is the focus of the infrastructure planning work stream, which is led by Stephen Carruthers. This work stream has been tasked with facilitating the development of a sound programme of prioritised physical resilience works for the 2018-2021 National Land Transport Programme.
This will include minor improvements, prioritised spot treatments, regional improvements and new/improved SH activities that will strengthen the resilience of the network.
We are gathering and developing guidance, tools, templates, resource libraries and information for our teams so they can work with resilience issues more confidently and consistently. These will increase our ability to identify and evaluate resilience risks and issues, and their likely impacts as well as prioritise potential responses.
New: Infrastructure tools and resources
The report on the National state highways resilience assessment tool for the 9 priority PBC corridors is now available.
The tool evaluates the resilience of the state highway network at a broad national level, and offers a methodology for assessing low frequency, high impact natural hazards at a regional level.
Similarly, the Measuring the economic resilience of infrastructure tool (MERIT) has also been finalised and both the full report and a summary-level MERIT Primer are now available for you to read.
You’ll find each of these resources in the Resources and information page.
