Respecting the community
Local communities played a huge role in planning for the MacKays Crossing to Peka Peka Expressway. They continue to be involved during construction through a community liaison group, neighbourhood forums, events organised by the project team, site tours, an information centre, presentations, newsletters and the internet.
The Transport Agency’s aims are always to show respect for the communities it is affecting, to minimise the community impacts of construction, and to listen to and address any concerns and issues that arise promptly and appropriately.
Some of the highlights of this project’s community liaison have been:
- A community open day to engage with the team and walk over the Kāpiti Road Bridge.
- Holding drop-in information sessions about how the Expressway will work (Photo courtesy of Mark Coote)
- Establishing a an information centre in the Coastlands Shopping Centre (Photo courtesy of Mark Coote)
Involvement with Big Digs at Raumati Beach, giving children a chance to operate a little digger
Holding community “peat grabs”, providing excavated peat to local gardeners
- Monthly bus tours showing the progress being made in otherwise hard-to-access work sites.
The Alliance has also contributed to community causes:
- Our monthly bus tours raised over $2000 for Age Concern Kāpiti
- Gold coin entry donations to our Public Open Day raised over $5000 for Kāpiti Youth Support
- We’re donated over $20000 worth of labour/materials to the Makarini Reserve Upgrade as part of a community development initiative
- Staff produced and sold a recipe calendar to raise $4500 for the new Kāpiti Ambulance Station
- In-kind support for local businesses, charities, Maraes etc
- Donations of heat pumps, water tanks and containers for community use
use. - Our Kāpiti Coast ExpressDay community day on the Expressway raised just over $12000 for local charities
