If you live in Paraparaumu, Paraparaumu Beach or Raumati, your key connection to the Expressway iswill be the Kāpiti Road Interchange. Alternatively, you can continue using the originalexisting state highway as your connection in and around the district.  This is a full interchange because it has a full set of on and off-ramps providing access both north and south. To manage these extra movements safely, traffic signals at on and off-ramps and an ‘intelligent’ control system will continually improve signal phasings and smooth traffic flows. New and existing traffic lights will be synchronised to ensure traffic keeps moving as efficiently as possible.

In partnership with the Kāpiti Coast District Council, Kāpiti Road has beenis being rebuilt to tie in withpreparation for the interchange. The new Kāpiti Road layout features:will feature:

  • two lanes in each direction between Te Roto Drive and west of Arawhata Road to keep through-traffic flowing
  • two extra turning lanes for vehicles turning right onto the Expressway
  • cycle lanes and footpaths on Kāpiti Road to provide space for pedestrians and cyclists. Push-button controlled pedestrian crossings are located at the foot of the Expressway on and off-ramps to ensure a safe passage across the road.
  • two-lane off-ramps to separate turning traffic
  • a signal-controlled crossing for the new shared pathway that runs alongside the Expressway.

IfAs the Expressway opens, if you’re traveling along Kāpiti Road from Paraparaumu Beach to the Paraparaumu town centre you will pass through seven sets of traffic lights – Milne Drive, Te Roto Drive, approach to the Expressway northern on-ramp, approach to the Expressway southern on-ramp, Arawhata Road, Brett Ambler Way, Rimu Road  –  before reaching the Kāpiti Road/originalRoad/existing State Highway 1 intersection. The left hand lane, and the middle lanes both go straight through, so you’ll need to get into one of those. The left lane is also a turning lane for the on-ramp, and the right hand lane is a right turn only for the on-ramp.
